National Cheeseburger Day

September 18, 2015 by Danny O'Leary Leave a Comment

Americas favorite sandwich is celebrating its heritage on Friday with national cheeseburger day. The day is different from National burger day, which is held on the 27th of August, because national cheeseburger day celebrates the introduction of cheese to the burger which formed the sandwich we love today. There are a few theory’s as to how and where the cheeseburger first surfaced, but the most popular is probably the story of Lionel Sternberger. Lionel worked in his fathers sandwich shop located in Pasadena California know as “The Rite Spot” in 1926. During an experiment to come up with new sandwiches, Lionel decided to drop a piece of cheese on a sizzling burger, this is the first known record of a cheeseburger.
However many people will debate this fact and claim the first cheeseburger had its roots elsewhere. Other theory’s include a cheeseburger appearing on a 1928 menu at a Los Angeles restaurant known as O’Dells. The item on the menu was a burger that was covered in chili, and also included cheese.
Another claim comes from Louisville Kentucky, a man with a restaurant known as Kaelin’s,  he says he invented the cheeseburger, although he has no further information to prove it.
The last, most known creator is Gus Belt, who founded Steak n’ Shake. Gus applied for a trademark on the word cheeseburger back in 1930.
