Painting with burger grease! Phil Hansen, a self made 2 and 3 dimensional artist. Well known for using uncommon mediums to create his work. Phil stared his artistic career in High school, however unforeseen nerve damage nearly ended his amazing ability. Phil did not give up, but instead explored other ways to create and express his artistic ability. He breaks down the normal rules of an artistic process and becomes more hands on. showing you direct manipulation with his subject as he creates his works of art! Phil was asked what his present approach now is and he responded with the following:
” My present approach evolved out of what seemed at the time to be an artistic cul-de-sac: damage to the nerves
in my forearm from the single-minded pursuit of pointillism. Driven to think of other ways to create art, I began
pushing myself to experiment with new media: my torso, a tricycle, X-rays, dandelions, the Bible, viewers’
experiences, and so on. The selection of the medium became integral to the art, as much a part of the story and
the holistic experience as the selected fragments themselves.”
Phil recently was able to create a giant mural of the Mona Lisa, composed of nothing but the grease from some McDonald’s Burgers. He uses the moist, greasy burger patty to leave stains on his canvas. In turn creating lines and shading until the figure of the Mona Lisa begins to appear. It takes a immense amount of skill and patience to pull off a piece of art like this, and it just goes to show the things that can happen when you believe in yourself, and never give up!
